Special Features:

The Silkie combines double- and triple-distilled single malts with soft grain whiskey and a small proportion of peated malt. This Irish blend has a gentle character without letting the peat influence fade entirely into the background. Sliabh Liag Distillers selected whiskeys from other Irish distilleries while its own whiskey distillery was still being developed.

The blend includes double-distilled single malt matured in sherry casks and corn-based grain whiskey matured in new oak casks and recharred casks. A butterscotch note complements its soft character of honey-sweet baked goods.

The whiskey is bottled at 46% without chill filtration or added colouring. The bottle contains 0.7 litres. Its name draws on a legend from the Donegal coast: silkies are seal creatures that can shed their skins and take human form. The blue-green label evokes the sea at the foot of the Sliabh Liag cliffs.

Tasting Notes:

  • Nose: On the nose, fresh green apples meet gentle malt notes. These develop into a honey-sweet, buttery impression.
  • Palate: The whiskey is exceptionally soft on the palate. Warm, honey-sweet gingerbread is accompanied by delicate notes of orange peel, brioche and buttered popcorn.
  • Finish: The finish is warming and leaves a very delicate peaty note.

Distillery/Bottler:

Silkie is the creation of Sliabh Liag Distillers in Ireland's County Donegal. James and Moira Doherty returned to their family roots to revive the whiskey tradition of the north-west. With Silkie, the company initially began as a blender and bottler of selected Irish whiskeys.

The company's own Ardara Distillery stands on the Show Field in the coastal town of Ardara. It operates three copper stills from Forsyths and includes the grain solids in the first still when producing its peated single malt. Known as All Grain In, this approach draws on Donegal's historical distilling practices. Its own Ardara Single Malt was released in 2025; Silkie, by contrast, originated as a blend of sourced whiskeys.
