Peated malt and at least 18 years of maturation in Hakushu’s climate are central to this limited release in the Tsukuriwake Selection 2024. The edition shows how Suntory develops distinct single malt characters through its choice of ingredients, level of peat, fermentation, distillation, casks and the blending of matured malts.

The long maturation brings pronounced smoke together with herbs, mineral notes and ripe apple. Sage, green apple and a hint of pineapple shape the nose; grapefruit and acacia honey join the smoke on the palate, before fresh green citrus lingers. The whisky was bottled in 2024 at 48% in 0.7-litre bottles.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: The nose reveals sage and ripe green apple, accompanied by a hint of ripe pineapple.
• Palate: On the palate, layered smoke unfolds with herbs, grapefruit and acacia honey.
• Finish: Clean smoke persists on the finish, accompanied by fresh green citrus.

Distillery/Bottler:

Keizo Saji founded Hakushu Distillery in 1973 as Suntory’s second malt distillery. It stands at an elevation of at least 700 metres in Japan’s forested Southern Alps. Soft mountain water and a cool, humid climate are among the conditions in which its whisky is made.

Hakushu uses only wooden washbacks for fermentation; different stills and cask types allow the distillery to produce a range of malt characters. Peated Malt is bottled by Hakushu Distillery itself. Suntory Holdings Limited owns the Hakushu brand.
