Special Features:

Identified as 02 Oshi-Dashi, this single-cask bottling is part of the Sumo Series. The heavily peated malt was distilled at Mars Komagatake in the Japanese Alps in 2018 and then matured for six years at Mars Tsunuki in Kagoshima in Bourbon Barrel 5458. The whisky was bottled at 61.5% in 2025, yielding 181 bottles from the cask.

The peat level is 50 ppm. Pear, mirabelle plum and exotic fruit provide fruity accents, while powerful peat smoke, earthy peat, salty sea air, sweet malt, spice, vanilla, roasted almonds and herbs shape the smoky-sweet character.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: Powerful smoke and peat dominate the nose. Candied lemon and pear follow, while a hint of bourbon vanilla and almond milk rounds out the intense aroma.
• Palate: The whisky is firm and lively on the palate. Banana and pineapple meet sweet malt and a flan-like sweetness, while the peat recedes slightly into the background.
• Finish: The finish is fresh and precise. Smoky and fruity impressions remain in balance, accompanied by a hint of vanilla and a salty sea breeze.

Distillery/Bottler:

The present-day Mars Komagatake Distillery was established in 1985 as Mars Shinshu Distillery in Miyada, at the foot of Mount Komagatake in the Japanese Central Alps. The site lies at an altitude of 798 metres. After a 19-year hiatus, the distillery resumed malt whisky production in 2011 and has borne its current name since 2024.

Hombo Shuzo Co., Ltd. operates two whisky distilleries, Komagatake and Tsunuki, as well as three maturation warehouses in different regions of Japan. The spirit for Cask 5458 was distilled at Komagatake and matured for six years at the Tsunuki site in Kagoshima. The whisky was released as an official bottling for La Maison du Whisky.
