For the Komagatake 2022 edition, Hombo Shuzo combined predominantly malt whiskies matured in ex-bourbon casks with smaller portions from sherry and port wine casks. Bottled in 2022, the edition comprises 60,000 bottles of 0.7 litres each. The single malt is bottled at 50% alcohol and comes in gift packaging.

Bright fruit and vanilla sit alongside prune, honey and nuts, while oak spice and a delicate bitter note contrast with the sweetness. The whisky is not chill-filtered and contains no added colouring.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: The nose brings apricot and banana together with vanilla, apple tea, floral honey and delicate oak spice.
• Palate: The whisky feels soft on the palate, where prune and hazelnut meet acacia honey and gentle fruitiness. A slightly bitter woody note gives the flavour structure.
• Finish: The long finish brings spiced oak, ripe persimmon and bitter orange marmalade. Fruity sweetness and acidity remain in balance, accompanied by a pleasant bitter note.

Distillery/Bottler:

Hombo Shuzo began producing whisky in 1949 under the technical direction of Kiichiro Iwai. For the Mars Shinshu Distillery, which opened in 1985, the company moved its whisky equipment from Yamanashi to Miyada in Nagano Prefecture. The distillery stands at the foot of Kiso-Komagatake at an elevation of 798 metres. After a pause beginning in 1992, it resumed malt distillation in 2011; it has been called Mars Komagatake Distillery since 2024.

The Komagatake 2022 edition is a single malt from this distillery and an official bottling by Hombo Shuzo. To create it, the company selected malt whiskies from different cask types, with maturation in ex-bourbon casks forming the largest share.
