For Nikka’s 90th anniversary, Coffey Grain is presented in limited-edition gift packaging. The bottle contains 0.7 litres of grain whisky at 45% ABV. The anniversary edition puts the established whisky and the way it is made in the spotlight.

Made predominantly from corn, the whisky is distilled in traditional Coffey stills at Miyagikyo. These continuously operating stills preserve grain aromas and give the spirit a creamy texture. For maturation, Nikka uses previously used, rebuilt or re-charred American oak casks. Its fruity profile brings together pear and citrus with coconut, vanilla and a slightly bitter final note.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: The nose offers ripe pear, cherry juice and exotic fruit. Blood orange and lemon bring fresh accents, accompanied by coconut and vanilla.
• Palate: On the palate, the whisky is juicy and creamy. Banana, pear nectar and caramel mingle with liquorice and star anise.
• Finish: Pear and Bourbon vanilla linger on the finish, with a slight bitterness.

Distillery/Bottler:

Nikka produces Coffey Grain at Miyagikyo Distillery. Its founder, Masataka Taketsuru, learned about grain distillation in Coffey stills during his time in Scotland. Nikka imported the first of these stills to Japan in 1963 and a second in 1966. Although they are demanding to operate and yield comparatively little spirit, the company values the grain aromas they retain and the spirit’s creamy texture.

Grain whisky from the Coffey stills is an important component of Nikka’s blends. Since 2012, the company has also offered Coffey Grain as a whisky in its own right; the anniversary edition presents it in special gift packaging.
