Roku brings Japan’s four seasons together in a gin recipe. Six Japanese botanicals complement eight classic gin ingredients: cherry blossoms and cherry leaves represent spring, Sencha and Gyokuro tea summer, Sansho pepper autumn, and yuzu peel winter. The Japanese ingredients are harvested at the peak of their respective seasons. This reflects the concept of Shun, which centres on the ideal time to harvest and enjoy an ingredient.

Roku means “six” in Japanese. The hexagonal bottle also reflects the number of Japanese botanicals. This gift pack contains a bottle of gin holding 0.7 litres and a Roku glass. The gin has an alcohol content of 43%.

The recipe combines floral and gently sweet impressions with citrus and restrained spice. For a gin and tonic, fine strips of ginger make a suitable accompaniment: the ginger garnish complements the gin’s citrus and spicy facets.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: On the nose, cherry blossoms and green tea combine to create a floral, gently sweet impression.
• Palate: Yuzu takes the lead on the palate. Beneath it, classic gin flavours combine with the Japanese botanicals to create a layered, balanced taste. The texture is soft and silky.
• Finish: Sansho pepper gives the finish a light yet distinctive pungency.

Distillery/Bottler:

Roku is made at Suntory’s Osaka Distillery, where the Suntory Liquor Atelier produces a range of spirits. Different stills allow processing to be tailored to the individual botanicals. For Roku, one of four distillation methods is used according to each ingredient’s properties. The choice of method brings out the desired aromas of each ingredient before they come together in the gin.

Suntory’s history began in 1899 with Shinjiro Torii. His aim was to create spirits with a distinctive Japanese character. Roku continues this approach through local botanicals and their seasonal selection.
