Special Features:
A light Japanese blend, Tenjaku combines selected malt and grain whiskies with spring water and is brought to 40%. The name Tenjaku refers to the skylark, known as Hibari in Japanese.
The water comes from Fuefuki in Yamanashi Prefecture. Drawn from 250 metres below the surface after filtering through porous volcanic rock, it is soft, slightly alkaline and moderately mineral-rich. When the blend is reduced to bottling strength, the water supports its smooth, approachable and balanced style.
Fuller malt and more restrained grain notes form the foundation of the profile. Pear and dried fruit contribute gentle sweetness, while oak, white pepper and a subtle hint of smoke provide spicy contrasts.
Tasting Notes:
- Nose: On the nose, sweet notes of pear and dried fruit mingle with a subtle hint of smoke.
- Palate: The whisky begins slightly angular on the palate before developing a round, smooth texture.
- Finish: The long finish is gently spicy, with a hint of white oak accompanying the unfolding sweetness.
Distillery/Bottler:
MINAMI ALPS WINE AND BEVERAGE CO.LTD. was founded in Yamanashi Prefecture in 2012 and took over the Fuefuki site that same year. The company began making whisky in 2015, and whisky has also been matured there in an underground cellar since 2016.
Kenji Watanabe is responsible for blending Tenjaku. An experienced winemaker and whisky producer, he harmonises the selected components through repeated nosing and tasting so that the malt and grain characters work together in balance.
