Special Features:

Tokinoka brings together grain and malt whiskies matured in three different cask types. Eigashima Shuzo creates the blend in Akashi, using predominantly grain whiskies complemented by malt whiskies. Its components mature in ex-bourbon, sherry and shochu casks. Alongside bourbon and sherry, two common previous cask contents in whisky maturation, the blend therefore also draws on casks that previously held the Japanese spirit shochu.

Honey-sweet cereal, green apple and raisins combine with white chocolate, floral malt and maple syrup. The slightly oily finish adds pink pepper and vanilla. This version contains 0.5 litres at 40% and is offered without a gift tube. The whisky is not smoky and contains no colouring.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: The nose reveals honey-sweet cereal, green apple and raisins.
• Palate: On the palate, white chocolate combines with floral malt and maple syrup.
• Finish: The finish is slightly oily, with notes of pink pepper and vanilla.

Distillery/Bottler:

Tokinoka comes from Eigashima Shuzo Co., Ltd., whose White Oak Distillery is in Akashi. The brand was developed for Société Dugas. The company was founded in 1888 under Hyokichi Urabe through the merger of several local sake producers. Eigashima has held a whisky production licence since 1919; a new whisky distillery was built beside the company headquarters in 1984.

For its whisky production, Eigashima sources malt from Great Britain and uses groundwater from its own wells. The spirits mature in oak casks at the coastal Akashi site. The company's storage tradition includes seven historic wooden buildings with different functions. The second warehouse, completed in 1891, is now used to store shochu and whisky; thick walls and few windows help keep the interior temperature stable.
