This European version of Roundstone Rye Cask Proof comes in a 0.7-litre bottle and is bottled at 58%. Catoctin Creek makes the whisky entirely from locally grown Virginia rye: the grain is mashed and fermented on site before being distilled in copper pot stills. The whisky is then matured in new charred Virginia oak.

The cask strength varies between batches, and the Cask Proof Edition is released approximately twice a year. It is dark and complex yet smooth despite its high strength. Caramel and butterscotch meet lemon, black pepper and wood, while dark chocolate, leather and tobacco add further depth. Cocoa and clove shape the long finish.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: The nose reveals pronounced aromas of orange, dry rye grain and honey, accompanied by spices and a hint of black pepper.
• Palate: The whisky is full-bodied and intense on the palate. Plum and orange make the first impression, followed by leather, honey and spices.
• Finish: The finish is long, spicy and fresh, with lingering pepper and leather.

Distillery/Bottler:

The Catoctin Creek Distilling Company makes Roundstone Rye in Purcellville, Virginia, and bottles the Cask Proof Edition under its own brand. Becky and Scott Harris founded the distillery in 2009; it was the first legal distillery in Loudoun County since Prohibition.

Becky Harris oversees production as Chief Distiller. Catoctin Creek uses local raw materials, distils in pot stills and regards Roundstone Rye as the distillery’s flagship whisky.
