Crystal Head Original combines Canadian corn with an unusual filtration process. The corn is distilled four times to produce a neutral grain spirit, which is then diluted to bottling strength with water from Newfoundland. The vodka undergoes seven filtrations in total; three of these pass through layers of so-called Herkimer diamonds. Despite their name, these are quartz crystals rather than diamonds.

The recipe contains no additives: no glycerine, sugar or citrus oils are added. Its light sweetness and delicate citrus note are therefore part of the vodka’s sensory character rather than the result of added flavourings. A subtle mineral nuance complements its restrained profile.

The clear skull-shaped bottle is made in Europe. Crystalline components are melted into the glass during production to increase its transparency. This version contains 0.7 litres of vodka at 40% alcohol and comes in black patterned gift packaging. The vodka can be enjoyed neat and lightly chilled or used in a classic vodka martini.

Distillery/Bottler:

Crystal Head was created by Canadian actor Dan Aykroyd and American artist John Alexander. They developed the brand with the aim of combining a vodka free from flavour-altering additives with a distinctive bottle design. Crystal Head first reached the market in 2008. Production takes place in St. John’s, Newfoundland, where the spirit is diluted to 40% alcohol with local water.

John Alexander designed the bottle, with Dan Aykroyd advising on its design. Their inspiration came from the legend of the thirteen crystal skulls. Developing the complex human skull shape took around two years. The bottles are manufactured by Bruni Glass in Milan.
