This Glen Garioch belongs to independent bottler Duncan Taylor’s Battlehill range. The Highland single malt was distilled in 2012, matured for nine years in oak casks and was bottled in 2021 at 46%. It retains its natural colour and has not been chill-filtered.

Battlehill links Scotch whisky with the history of the area around Huntly, where Duncan Taylor is based. The name recalls the battle between Robert the Bruce and John Comyn near the town. The range includes both single malts and single grains.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: The nose offers plenty of fruit, including pear. Sulphurous notes appear alongside an impression of damp, slightly musty cardboard. With air, the sulphurous sharpness eases a little as the fruit becomes more pronounced.
• Palate: On the palate, sweet fruitiness and sulphurous notes combine with a little spice. The fruit gradually becomes more prominent, accompanied by slight acidity and some bitterness.
• Finish: Fruit, slight acidity and a subtly bitter impression linger on the finish.

Distillery/Bottler:

Glen Garioch is located in Oldmeldrum in Aberdeenshire and is among Scotland’s oldest operating distilleries. In 2022, following extensive renovation, the distillery unveiled its reinstated malting floors and its wash still, which had returned to direct firing. This return to traditional methods took place after the whisky in this bottling had been distilled.

Duncan Taylor was founded in Glasgow in 1938 as a cask broker and trading company. From the 1960s onwards, its then owner Abe Rosenberg built up stocks of single malt and single grain casks. Today, the company’s activities in Huntly include cask trading, maturation, marrying and bottling. The whisky for this Battlehill release comes from Glen Garioch, with Duncan Taylor acting as the independent bottler.
