A recipe passed down through generations of a family from the Mourne Mountains forms the basis of this poitín. Killowen uses wheat, barley and oats, drawing on the local distilling tradition. This bottling comes from Batch 2, has an alcohol content of 48% and is presented in a 0.5-litre bottle.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: On the nose, grassy notes mingle with vanilla, spice and a sugar-like sweetness.
• Palate: The poitín is creamy and sweet on the palate. Pine needles, vanilla and cereal notes round out the flavour.
• Finish: Vanilla, cardamom and other spice notes linger on the finish.

Distillery/Bottler:

Killowen Distillery is located in the Mourne Mountains in County Down, Northern Ireland. Among the people behind the distillery is Brendan Carty, who originally worked as an architect. Visits to Peter Bignell at Belgrove Distillery in Tasmania and his exploration of historical Irish grain recipes helped shape his path towards establishing his own distillery.

Killowen uses two handmade copper pot stills: Christoir has a capacity of 1000 litres, while Broc holds 800 litres. Both are directly fired. Condensation takes place in worm tubs, where alcohol vapour turns back into liquid as it passes through water-cooled copper coils. The distillery combines this equipment with deliberately slow distillation.
