For Dark Expression, Spirits of Old Man brings together aged rums from South America and the Caribbean. The Colombian component makes a particularly distinctive contribution. The blend includes spirits distilled in continuous column stills as well as copper pot stills. The individual rums mature in the Caribbean; the youngest are at least eight years old, while the average age is just over ten years.

The third release in the Rum Project series centres on dark chocolate and espresso. Bitter accents complement the softer vanilla and caramel notes. The blend has a creamy character and is bottled at 40% in a 0.7-litre bottle. Its awards include the title Rum of the Year 2019 and double gold at the China Wine & Spirits Awards 2019.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: Coffee combines with vanilla and caramel on the nose. Spicy oak notes, subtle raspberry and a hint of citrus fruit add further detail.
• Palate: The blend feels smooth on the palate. Dark chocolate and fruit shape the flavour, complemented by vanilla, coffee and caramel coffee. Gentle tobacco, delicate orange peel and light spice add further accents, while bitter notes give it a more bitter edge.
• Finish: Bitter cocoa, cinnamon and oak linger in the long finish.

Distillery/Bottler:

Spirits of Old Man is the brand of northern German company Oldman Spirits GmbH. Its Rum Projects are created by selecting and balancing different rum distillates. The series began with Project One: development initially aimed for a pronounced vanilla character, but coconut ultimately became its defining feature. The intended vanilla note later found its own place in the range with Project Four.

Oldman Spirits celebrated its tenth anniversary in 2024. During a visit to its premises in Jübek that year, the company explained that bottling, labelling and packaging had been carried out entirely by hand until 2019. Its own cask warehouse and semi-automatic and fully automatic bottling equipment followed. Alongside its own brands, Oldman Spirits also develops and bottles spirits for other companies.
