For this bergamot liqueur, Joseph Cartron combines the juice of the fruit with its aromatic essential oils. The Italian bergamot varieties Fantastico, Feminello and Castagrano are used. After the fruit is pressed, the essential oils are distilled and blended with the juice and high-purity alcohol. Crystallised sugar is then added and dissolves in the mixture. The process thus brings together two distinct elements of the citrus fruit: its juice and the oils from its peel.

The result combines bergamot character with sweetness, fruit acidity and delicate bitter notes. The liqueur has an opalescent, alabaster hue. It contains 20% alcohol and is offered here in a 0.7-litre bottle. It can be enjoyed neat and well chilled; in cocktails, it works, for example, in a spritz with Crémant and soda water or in a fizz with rum.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: On the nose, the liqueur is fresh and open, with a scent of lemon peel.
• Palate: Fruit and sweetness are balanced on the palate. The texture is soft and rounded, accompanied by delicate bitter notes.
• Finish: Fruit acidity remains perceptible in the lingering finish, lending it freshness.

Distillery/Bottler:

Joseph Cartron was founded in 1882 in Nuits-Saint-Georges in Burgundy and remains based there today. The family business became known particularly for its Crème de Cassis de Bourgogne, made from locally grown blackcurrants. For local fruit, the company works with growers with whom relationships have developed over generations. Ingredients that do not grow in Burgundy are selected from other growing regions.

Processing is tailored to each fruit or botanical ingredient: across the range, both cold maceration in stainless steel vessels and hot maceration in a copper still are used. Processing time, sugar content and alcohol strength are also set individually for each liqueur. In the bergamot liqueur, this ingredient-specific approach is reflected in the separate processing of the juice and essential oils.
