Volume: 0.7 litres | Alcohol content: 60.9% | Chill filtration: No | Colouring: No
Special Features:
This bottling from The Exclusive Cask series comes from the single ASB barrel 198374. The cask had initially held rum and subsequently smoky whisky before the Lindores Abbey whisky matured in it. The single malt was distilled on 25 April 2019 and bottled three years later, on 4 February 2023. The release comprised 245 bottles.
At 60.9%, the bottling combines high intensity with tropical fruit, sweet cask notes and pronounced peat smoke. The whisky was neither chill-filtered nor coloured.
Tasting Notes:
- Nose: Caramelised almonds bring a warm, nutty accent to the nose. Ripe tropical fruit and vanilla follow, with gentle peat smoke drifting above them.
- Palate: Pineapple, mango and papaya bring lively fruity sweetness to the palate. Powerful peat smoke with a lightly salty note provides contrast, while honey, creamy toffee and subtle spices round out the flavour.
- Finish: Peat smoke remains clearly present throughout the long finish. Sweet fruit and caramel fade alongside delicate wood spice.
Distillery/Bottler:
Lindores Abbey Distillery stands in Newburgh, in the Scottish county of Fife, at a site of considerable historical significance. An entry in the royal accounts from 1494 names John Cor, a monk at Lindores, who was commissioned by King James IV to turn eight bolls of malt into aqua vitae. This entry is regarded as the earliest written evidence of Scotch whisky production. Spirit flowed once again at the present-day distillery in 2017, and its first modern single malt appeared in 2021. The 2019 vintage therefore dates from the early production years of the revived distillery.
Lindores ferments its wort for 96 to 114 hours in traditional wooden washbacks to encourage the formation of fruity esters. Slow distillation runs and two smaller spirit stills provide extensive copper contact and are intended to create a light, fruit-forward distillery character. In this single-cask bottling, that spirit character provides a counterpoint to the sweet rum-cask notes and the peat smoke imparted by the cask’s previous contents.
