Special Features:

For this single-cask bottling in the Connoisseurs Choice range, Gordon & MacPhail selected a Refill American Hogshead in which the whisky distilled at Littlemill in 1991 matured for 31 years. On 7 February 2023, cask 549 yielded 226 bottles at a natural cask strength of 44.5%. The release belongs to Recollection Series #2, which brings together whiskies from closed distilleries. The 0.7-litre bottle is presented in a wooden box.

Its profile combines citrus fruit, apple and tropical fruit with subtle honey, floral notes and green nuances. Charred oak and black pepper add a spicy accent. The whisky is non-chill filtered and contains no added colouring.

Tasting Notes:

  • Nose: On the nose, lemon and lime mingle with subtle honey. Fresh apple and tropical fruit give way to a hint of hay.
  • Palate: On the palate, sweet citrus fruit meets honeysuckle and garden mint. Dried pineapple develops, balanced by charred oak and gentle black pepper.
  • Finish: The finish is medium-bodied, with grapefruit and peanut.

Distillery/Bottler:

Littlemill stood beside the Clyde in the Scottish Lowlands, with a history dating back to 1772. In the early 1930s, the distillery switched from triple to double distillation. Its stills combined copper pots with rectifying columns rather than conventional swan necks. This design allowed closer control of distillation and the production of different whisky styles. Littlemill closed permanently in 1994, and a fire destroyed the remaining facilities in 2004.

Gordon & MacPhail began in Elgin in 1895 and developed into an independent bottler that pairs spirits with selected oak casks for long maturation. Experience with spirits from more than 100 Scottish distilleries has been passed down through four generations of the Urquhart family. George Urquhart established the Connoisseurs Choice range in 1968. The surviving Littlemill casks now make it possible to release whisky from a distillery that no longer produces any itself.
