A Night on Earth in Jerez de la Frontera is the third edition in the series and was released at the close of The Macallan’s 200th anniversary year. It draws on the New Year’s Eve traditions of the Andalusian city where the oak casks for this whisky are made and seasoned with sherry. The Whisky Mastery Team combined European and American oak casks for its maturation.

Pastries, grapes and anise connect the whisky’s character with two Jerez traditions: the twelve grapes eaten at New Year and pestiños, a local pastry. Jerez artist María Melero designed the layered premium presentation box with vineyard motifs and azulejos, the city’s colourful ceramic tiles. In the whisky, honey, raisins, honey-glazed almonds, vanilla, spices and a hint of rosemary develop this theme further.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: On the nose, honey and pestiño pastries meet raisins, cinnamon, anise and oak, with citrus adding freshness.
• Palate: On the palate, sweet pastries and white grapes mingle with honey-glazed almonds and vanilla. Spices and a hint of rosemary complete the picture.
• Finish: The fairly short finish is sweet, lively and warming. Baking spices, raisins and clove linger alongside charred oak.

Distillery/Bottler:

Alexander Reid founded The Macallan in 1824 above the River Spey. The distillery, opened in 2018, stands near the historic Easter Elchies House. The Macallan has been part of Edrington’s portfolio since 1999. For this distillery bottling, the Whisky Mastery Team developed the combination of European and American oak; the casks are made in Jerez to The Macallan’s specifications and seasoned with sherry.
