Cómplice Orígenes is an unaged Espadín mezcal that offers an approachable introduction to the brand’s agave spirits. It is made exclusively from Espadín, botanically known as Agave angustifolia Haw. The plants grow for eight to ten years before processing: this period refers to the age of the agaves, not to any cask maturation of the mezcal.

This bottling from San Baltazar Guelavila in Oaxaca belongs to the Mezcal Artesanal category. At 40% alcohol, its soft, rounded character remains approachable without losing its herbal and mineral qualities. The clear mezcal contains no added colouring and comes in a bottle containing 0.7 litres. It can be enjoyed neat or in cocktails such as a Mezcalita or a Paloma.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: A light smoky note appears first on the nose. Herbs and fresh citrus notes then emerge, complemented by mineral impressions.
• Palate: The mezcal feels silky and soft on the palate. Gentle citrus notes mingle with fresh fruit flavours.
• Finish: The long, fresh finish leaves lingering citrus notes and a light smoky touch. Mineral nuances round out the finish.

Distillery/Bottler:

Mezcal Cómplice has its roots in Oaxaca. Julio Fernández grew up there with a mezcal culture in which the drink accompanies family celebrations and other important life events. His early encounters with travelling mezcaleros shaped his interest in their diverse aromas, textures and artisanal methods. The brand works with regional Maestros Mezcaleros and, alongside the approachable Orígenes, offers stronger Espadín bottlings and mezcals made from various wild-growing agaves.

The mezcaleros include Edgar García from San Baltazar Guelavila. He learned the craft within his family from his grandparents and father, later establishing his own production facility. In Santa María Albarradas, Edgar Martínez continues the work of his late father, Epigmenio Martínez. Working with different producers connects the brand with Oaxaca’s varied local craft traditions.
