The blend consists mainly of Caol Ila and Williamson, with a small proportion of Highland Malt Blend. The malts matured predominantly in Refill Hogsheads; heavily toasted French oak casks were used for the Highland component.

John Glaser founded Compass Box in 2000 as a house devoted to composing Scotch whisky. For The Peat Monster, the company selects and marries malts from different Scottish distilleries rather than distilling the whisky at a distillery of its own. The components contribute fruitier, sweeter and more strongly medicinal styles of smoke to the blend.
The range began with a smoky composition created specifically for Park Avenue Liquor Shop in New York. Compass Box developed it into The Peat Monster as a permanent release in 2004. The blended malt also remained part of the core range when it was refreshed in 2024.
