Special Features:
This five-year-old release from the Glasgow 1770 Small Batch Series is Batch 01 and comes from casks 20/1627 and 20/1629. The spirit was double-distilled from malt peated to 50 ppm and filled into first-fill ex-Wild Turkey bourbon casks on 12 October 2020, where it matured for three years and eight months.
On 17 June 2024, the whisky was transferred for a further year and eight months into 225-litre European oak hogsheads that had held Passito di Caluso since 2016. This Piedmontese DOCG sweet wine is made exclusively from Erbaluce grapes that are air-dried for several months after harvest. This concentrates the wine’s sugar, acidity and aromatic compounds. Dried herbs and lively acidity are also characteristic of the wine. In the whisky, dried apricot and honey contrast with the maritime smoke profile.
The whisky was bottled at 57.8% on 16 March 2026, with Batch 01 comprising 690 bottles. Maritime salinity, sweet smoke and wax form the sensory foundation, complemented by lemon, earth, apricot, banana, candied ginger and mineral notes.
Tasting Notes:
- Nose: On the nose, the whisky opens with coastal salinity and sweet smoke, followed by sun-dried hay, polished wood, wax, bright lemon and an earthy depth.
- Palate: On the palate, honeyed sweetness and dried apricot mingle with maritime salinity, soft smoke and smoked salt.
- Finish: The long finish remains rich and honeyed, with baked banana, candied ginger, wax and mineral smoke developing through to the end.
Distillery/Bottler:
The Glasgow Distillery Company Ltd produces and bottles this Glasgow 1770 itself. The smoky spirit is double-distilled from malt peated to 50 ppm. The compact copper stills installed for whisky production are designed to provide intensive copper contact and produce a light, fruity new make spirit.
Liam Hughes and Mike Hayward founded the company in 2012 with the aim of bringing single malt distillation back to Glasgow. The city distillery filled its first whisky cask on 5 March 2015. Glasgow 1770 was launched in 2018, while the Small Batch Series has provided a framework for experimental maturation and cask finishes since 2022.
