The Glasgow 1770 Mini Collection brings together the distillery’s three annually produced house styles: The Original, Peated and Triple Distilled. The black gift box with copper-coloured details contains one 0.05-litre bottle of each single malt, all bottled at 46%. None is chill-filtered or coloured.

The Original is made from unpeated malt. It first matures in first-fill ex-bourbon casks, then receives a finish of about six months in new American white oak. Triple Distilled also uses unpeated malt but is distilled three times. For this expression, the distillery marries whisky from ex-bourbon casks with a smaller proportion from new American white oak. Peated, by contrast, is distilled twice from peated malt. After maturing in new American white oak, it spends eight to twelve months finishing in Pedro Ximénez sherry hogsheads.

The range runs from the fruit and butterscotch of The Original through the apple, pear, white chocolate and creamy texture of Triple Distilled to the sweet smoke, toffee, dark fruit and cocoa of Peated.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: The Original initially offers dark dried fruit with tropical hints. Delicate notes of pastry, oak and freshly cut grass then emerge. In Triple Distilled, vanilla and white chocolate come before apple, pear and peach. Peated combines sweet smoke with toffee, vanilla, dark dried fruit, black pepper and a hint of flambéed orange.
• Palate: On the palate, The Original brings butterscotch and the caramelised sugar crust of crème brûlée, alongside pear, figs, dates, raisins, almonds, honey and creamy shortbread. Triple Distilled feels soft and creamy: vanilla and caramel give way to orchard fruit and berries, followed by floral notes and sweet almonds. In Peated, tobacco leaf, dark toffee and cocoa meet soft, sweet peat, while earthy notes and a little sage round out the flavour.
• Finish: The Original has a long finish of orange marmalade, nutmeg, oak and light spice. Honey, aniseed and black pepper linger in Triple Distilled’s long finish, accompanied by a little warming wood spice. Peated finishes long and smooth, with salted caramel, liquorice and lingering spice.

Distillery/Bottler:

Liam Hughes and Mike Hayward founded The Glasgow Distillery Company in 2012 to bring single malt production back to Glasgow. Glasgow 1770 recalls an earlier city distillery that operated from 1770 to 1902. Based in Glasgow’s Hillington district, the independent distillery uses little automation and has its own cooper and a comparatively large distilling team.

The three house styles result from different approaches to distillation and deliberate cask selection. For the peated whisky, for example, the distillery ferments for at least 72 hours and runs two slow distillations in copper pot stills. For Triple Distilled, it passes the spirit through the smaller still a third time and selects a higher cut point for the heart. The spirits thus differ even before cask maturation.
