Special Features:
Glasgow 1770 The Original is an unpeated, double-distilled Lowland single malt with two distinct stages of maturation. It first matures in first-fill ex-bourbon casks before receiving an approximately six-month finish in virgin American white oak. The virgin oak casks used for this come from Kelvin Cooperage in Kentucky. The Original belongs to the Signature Range and traces its origins to the distillery’s first whisky release in 2018.
Its fruit-led character combines dark and tropical fruit with creamy dessert and pastry notes. Vanilla, orange peel and balanced black pepper spice round out the flavour profile. The Original has no age statement: the distillery selects casks to maintain a consistent flavour profile, while the age can vary between batches.
This 2023 bottling contains 0.7 litres and is offered without gift packaging. The whisky is bottled at 46% without chill filtration or added colouring; its colour develops during cask maturation.
Tasting Notes:
- Nose: Dried dark fruit leads on the nose, with tropical hints. Subtle notes of biscuit, oak and freshly cut grass follow.
- Palate: The palate reveals sweet butterscotch and the caramelised crust of crème brûlée. These are joined by hints of freshly sliced pear, dried figs, dates and raisins, alongside sweet almond, honey and creamy, buttery pastries.
- Finish: The long finish evokes generous orange marmalade and nutmeg. Layered woody notes and gentle spice sustain the aftertaste.
Distillery/Bottler:
Liam Hughes and Mike Hayward founded The Glasgow Distillery Company Ltd. in December 2012. They established the distillery in a converted warehouse in Hillington, on the outskirts of Glasgow. After starting with gin in 2014, whisky production followed: the first cask of single malt was filled on 5 March 2015. The name Glasgow 1770 recalls the historic Glasgow Distillery, which was founded in 1770 and closed in 1902. Today’s distillery is a separate, newly founded enterprise.
For The Original, the distillery uses unpeated malted barley from the United Kingdom and soft water from Loch Katrine. Fermentation with MG Pinnacle Distillers Yeast lasts at least 72 hours. This is followed by two slow distillations in small copper pot stills. Alongside this double-distilled, unpeated style, the distillery also produces triple-distilled unpeated whisky and double-distilled peated whisky. These three production styles form the basis of the Signature Range.
