For Batch #1, Glasgow Distillery selected three casks of its unpeated, double-distilled The Original and married the whiskies for bottling at natural cask strength. The whisky first matured in first-fill ex-bourbon casks, then received a finish in heavily charred new American white oak casks. The release comprises 750 bottles at 61.3% alcohol. It was neither chill-filtered nor coloured.

Cask strength brings its fruity house style into clear focus: alongside bitter orange marmalade, pear and toffee apple are dried apricot, roasted pineapple, dark fruits and vanilla. Malt biscuits, marzipan, aniseed and oak add sweet and spicy accents. Unlike the regular 46% release of The Original, Batch #1 was bottled without dilution to that lower strength.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: On the nose, bitter orange marmalade and dried apricot open into toffee apple and spiced dark fruit. The scent of freshly shaved oak joins them.
• Palate: The whisky is rich and full-bodied on the palate. Poached pear, tropical fruit and roasted pineapple mingle with malt biscuits. Hints of marzipan and spicy notes of clove and aniseed complete the picture.
• Finish: The long finish leaves flame-kissed orange peel and pronounced oak spice lingering, accompanied by a delicate liquorice note.

Distillery/Bottler:

The independent Glasgow Distillery was established in 2012 and operates in the Hillington industrial area on the edge of Glasgow. Its name recalls an earlier Glasgow distillery founded in 1770. The present-day team uses little automation and employs its own cooper to inspect and maintain casks on site.

For its unpeated, double-distilled style, the distillery ferments the wort for at least 72 hours in washbacks and distils it slowly through two small copper pot stills. This approach aims to produce a fruity new-make spirit. Batch #1 is a separate cask selection in this style and an official distillery bottling.
