Special Features:
Glasgow 1770 Triple Distilled combines triple distillation with maturation in bourbon casks and new American white oak. The miniature contains 0.05 litres of the same distillery bottling as the larger format, at 46%. The distillery uses unpeated barley malt for this non-smoky single malt.
The wort ferments for at least 72 hours with MG+ Pinnacle Distillers Yeast, which contributes to the fresh, citrus-led character of the young spirit. The first distillation runs slowly in a 2,500-litre copper still; the second and third take place in a smaller, 1,500-litre still. On the third run, the distillery selects a high cut point for the heart of the spirit, producing a light, smooth distillate. Maturation takes place mainly in first-fill and refill ex-bourbon casks, with a small proportion of new American white oak casks. The whiskies matured in these different casks are married before bottling. The single malt is not chill-filtered and contains no added colour.
Tasting Notes:
- Nose: Sweet vanilla and white chocolate appear first on the nose, followed by apple, pear and peach.
- Palate: The whisky feels smooth and balanced on the palate. Vanilla, delicate caramel and cream give way to juicy orchard fruit and berries, followed by subtle floral notes and sweet almond.
- Finish: The long finish combines rich honey with anise and black pepper; a gentle, warming oak spice lingers.
Distillery/Bottler:
The Glasgow Distillery Company was founded in 2012 by a group that included Liam Hughes, Mike Hayward and Ian McDougall. Single malt distillation returned to Glasgow in 2014. The name Glasgow 1770 recalls an earlier city distillery, founded in 1770 and closed in 1902. Today’s independent distillery operates in the Hillington industrial area with limited automation, its own cooper on site and a sizeable distilling team for an operation of its scale.
Triple Distilled is one of three house styles the distillery produces each year. Alongside double-distilled whiskies made from unpeated or peated malt, this style receives a third distillation. This allows the distillery to offer distinct characters from its own production.
