Special Features:
Glasgow 1770 Triple Distilled Smooth is made from unpeated malted barley and undergoes fermentation for at least 72 hours. After the first run in the 2,500-litre wash still, it passes twice through the 1,500-litre spirit still. During the third run, the heart is collected between 81 and 75%; the new make spirit is then reduced to 63.5% before the casks are filled. This method produces an especially smooth, fruit-forward new make spirit.
For maturation, the distillery mainly combines first-fill and refill ex-bourbon casks. A further 4 to 8% of the cask recipe is matured entirely in virgin American white oak. The whiskies from the three cask parcels are married before bottling.
The single malt is bottled at 46%, at natural colour and without chill filtration. It carries no age statement because the ages of the whiskies used may vary between batches, while the distillery aims to maintain a consistent flavour profile.
Tasting Notes:
- Nose: The nose initially reveals sweet vanilla and white chocolate, followed by aromatic apple, pear and ripe peach.
- Palate: The whisky is balanced and smooth on the palate. Bright vanilla, soft caramel and double cream lead into juicy orchard fruits and berries, followed by delicate floral notes and sweet almonds.
- Finish: The finish is long and lingering, with rich honey, aniseed and black pepper fading alongside a touch of warming wood spice.
Distillery/Bottler:
The Glasgow Distillery Company Ltd. produces and bottles this single malt under its own Glasgow 1770 brand. Liam Hughes and Mike Hayward founded the company in 2012, subsequently establishing Glasgow’s first new independent single malt distillery in more than a century in the Hillington district. The distillery filled its first whisky cask on 5 March 2015, before Glasgow 1770 was launched in June 2018.
The brand name recalls the original Glasgow Distillery Company, which was founded in 1770 and closed in 1902. The present-day distillery divides its production year among three new make styles: double-distilled spirit from unpeated malt, double-distilled spirit from peated malt and triple-distilled spirit from unpeated malt. The triple-distilled style accounts for around one third of the production year.
