Special Features:

This limited four-year-old release combines lightly peated and unpeated spirit from the Isle of Raasay Distillery. The batches distilled between May and July 2021 were fully matured in Marsala Vergine barriques from the Sicilian house of Frazzitta, rather than merely receiving a short finish. The mature batches were married in June 2025, and the distillery bottled the whisky on Raasay in July. The release comprises 12,300 bottles.

Marsala Vergine is a bone-dry, oxidatively matured fortified wine. The barriques used had held this wine for up to 30 years and impart nutty, dried-fruit, saline, herbal and maritime notes to the whisky. These are joined by grape must, stewed apple, apricot and balsamic notes, alongside ginger, maple syrup, gentle smoke and dark toffee.

The release was made using Diablo and Concerto barley together with Distilamax MW yeast. Fermentation lasted either three or five days, depending on the batch, and the new make spirit entered the barriques at 63.5%. The whisky was bottled at 50.7%, with no added colouring and without chill filtration.

Tasting Notes:

  • Nose: Sweet grape must opens the nose, accompanied by delicate spiciness and Parma violet.
  • Palate: Stewed apple and sweet pear mingle on the palate with ginger, maple syrup and a delicate balsamic accent.
  • Finish: The finish is long and marked by lingering smoke.

Distillery/Bottler:

The Isle of Raasay Distillery began operating in the converted Borodale House on 14 September 2017, marking the start of the island’s first legal distillation. Founders Bill Dobbie and Alasdair Day based the house style on older Hebridean whiskies, bringing light peat smoke together with dark fruit. The distillery produces and matures its whiskies on Raasay, where it also bottles them. For this release, it produced both peated and unpeated batches. These batches were fully matured in Marsala barriques and then married, after which the distillery bottled the resulting whisky on Raasay.
