Lochlea Cask Strength Batch #3 is the first release in this series to combine Oloroso Sherry Butts with former Islay casks that bring a peaty influence. Master Blender Jill Boyd selected and married the whiskies for this third annual limited cask-strength release. Bottled at 59.8% without adding water, Batch 3 combines depth of fruit, savoury smoke and warming spice.

The cask combination creates a bold contrast between fruity sweetness and smoky impressions. The barley for this Single Malt comes from Lochlea Farm, where the whisky also matures.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: Juicy, ripe red fruits and berries unfold on the nose alongside savoury barbecue smoke. A subtle hint of smoked bacon adds to the bouquet.
• Palate: On the palate, cherries and ripe berries combine with dark molasses and dark sugar. Warming ginger cake, toasted rye and smoke from charred wood add spicy and toasted accents.
• Finish: The finish is long, rich and complex. Baking spices, salty smoke and oak tannin intertwine with delicate floral notes of red roses.

Distillery/Bottler:

Lochlea Distillery produces its whisky on its own farm in South Ayrshire. All its barley is grown on the farm, and the whisky matures at the same site. The distillery uses two copper pot stills whose shape is designed to produce a light, fruit-led distillery character. The stillman controls the steam supply and thus the course of distillation.

The distillery is housed within the historic farm buildings and first distilled in August 2018. Former agricultural buildings now house the equipment for mashing, fermentation and distillation. Converted cattle sheds serve as maturation warehouses, keeping the carefully selected casks right on the farm.
