Special Features:

Our Barley brings together three cask types in Lochlea's permanently available single malt. Whisky matured in First-Fill Bourbon Barrels, Oloroso sherry casks and STR barriques is married for this release. The recipe was developed by Production Director John Campbell and complements the distillery's limited seasonal editions. The barley used for the whisky is grown on Lochlea Farm.

The cask combination adds orange marmalade, golden syrup and cinnamon to the distillery's fruity character. Our Barley is not smoky and is bottled at 46% without chill filtration or added colouring. The bottle contains 0.7 litres and comes in gift packaging.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: On the nose, pear syrup and fruit sweets meet the scent of warm, freshly cut grass. A hint of orange marmalade rounds out the bouquet.
• Palate: On the palate, golden syrup, pepper and rye bread combine with macadamia nuts. A light soft-drink sweetness reminiscent of cream soda adds another note.
• Finish: The long finish is citrus-led. Orange and beeswax linger together.

Distillery/Bottler:

Lochlea is an independent, family-run distillery in Ayrshire in the Scottish Lowlands. Barley cultivation, distillation and cask maturation all take place on the same farm estate. Its agricultural roots run deep: Robert Burns once worked the land here. Distillation on the farm began in August 2018. Rather than building a separate facility, existing farm buildings were converted for whisky production; former cattle sheds now serve as cask warehouses.

During mashing, the ground barley malt is extracted with three successive additions of water. Lochlea aims for a clear wort that also retains the cereal character. Distillation takes place in two copper pot stills. The distiller controls the steam supply manually; the shape of the stills and contact with copper support the light, fruit-led style. Casks are sourced directly and selected to allow the whisky to develop during maturation without masking the spirit's character.
