Special Features:

Smoke Without Fire is the gently smoky expression in the Lochlea Single Estate Core Range and follows on from the Ploughing Edition. The single malt matures in a combination of refill bourbon casks that previously held peated whisky and red wine casks. This brings together soft red fruit and floral sweetness with restrained campfire smoke, without obscuring the whisky’s bright, fruit-forward style.

Lochlea bottles the whisky at 46%, at natural colour and without chill filtration. The barley comes from the estate itself, where distillation and maturation also take place, defining the Single Estate approach behind this expression.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: Red berries, cherry blossom and unopened flowers mingle with lemon peel and soft smoke.
• Palate: On the palate, saline sea smoke, freshly cut oak and campfire charcoal meet light citrus, delicate fruit and a hint of sherbet.
• Finish: Light char and soft floral notes linger on the finish before fresh phenolic notes fade gently.

Distillery/Bottler:

Lochlea is an independent, family-owned farm distillery near Craigie in Ayrshire. Neil McGeoch began developing the idea of establishing a distillery on the farm in 2014, and distillation commenced in summer 2018.

The distillery grows Laureate barley across its own 90 hectares, draws water from a well on the farm and distils in two copper pot stills. The whisky matures in warehouses on the estate, including converted cattle sheds.

Smoke Without Fire is Lochlea’s unpeated approach to creating a smoky profile. Refill bourbon casks that previously held peated whisky provide the gentle peat and smoke influence, while the red wine casks support the fruity and floral character.
