Lochlea Distillery Sowing Edition 3rd Crop concludes the Sowing trilogy while also opening the final series of four seasonal Lochlea releases. The Sowing Edition represents spring on the working Lochlea Farm, when the barley used for whisky production is sown. The edition thus connects the single malt directly with the farm’s agricultural calendar.

For the Third Crop, Lochlea selected exclusively fresh first-fill ex-bourbon barrels. The whiskies in this cask selection were nine months older than those used for the Second Crop. Lochlea also highlights the floral aromas that the team associates with distillation during the colder months; a crisp pear note complements the character of the release.

The single malt is bottled at 46% with its natural colour. The distillery also forgoes chill filtration.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: Almonds mingle with rose petals on the nose.
• Palate: Lively apple blossom and white pepper unfold on the palate.
• Finish: The finish recalls warm straw and freshly cut grass.

Distillery/Bottler:

Lochlea is an independent, family-owned farm distillery in Ayrshire. Its barley is grown on its own land, while distillation and maturation also take place on site. This single-estate approach unites the cultivation of the raw material and whisky production at the same Lowland location.

Lochlea Farm, acquired in 2006, initially operated as a cattle farm. Following a trial with 50 acres of malting barley in 2015, the conversion of its former agricultural buildings began in 2017. Among other changes, the former piggery was incorporated into the distillery, while the cattle sheds became bonded warehouses. The distillery commenced operations in August 2018.

The farm also has a notable history: Scottish poet Robert Burns lived and worked at Lochlea Farm from 1777 to 1784. The distillery’s barley now grows in those same fields.

Facts:
