This Speyside single malt from Benrinnes Distillery is part of Murray McDavid's Cask Craft Batch 3. It was finished in Madeira wine barriques from Justino's. The Cask Craft Collection explores the finishing of Scottish single malts in various cask types and the balanced interplay between oak and spirit.

Cereals, orchard fruits and freshly baked sweet pastries shape its underlying character. The Madeira finish adds blood orange, dried fruits and mild oak spice, complemented by redcurrants, honeyed cereals, orange blossom, fruity caramel and sweet spice.

This bottling from Batch MAD-03 contains 0.7 litres and is bottled at 44.5%. It has a natural colour and is not chill-filtered.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: The nose combines redcurrants, honeyed cereals and orange blossom.
• Palate: The palate reveals fruity caramel and sweet spice.
• Finish: Dried fruits linger on the finish.

Distillery/Bottler:

The roots of Benrinnes Distillery date back to 1826, when Peter MacKenzie began making whisky at Whitehouse Farm. A flood largely destroyed the original operation in 1829; the present distillery was established at a new site on the northern slope of Ben Rinnes in 1835. It is now owned by Diageo.

Murray McDavid selected the Benrinnes single malt for this Cask Craft bottling, refined it in Madeira wine barriques from Justino's and bottled it as an independent bottler. The company was founded in 1994 by wine merchants Mark Reynier and Simon Coughlin together with Gordon Wright of Springbank. It soon became known for finishing Scotch whisky in unusual casks, particularly wine casks. Murray McDavid is now based at Coleburn Distillery in Speyside.
