The limited Extra Marriage edition commemorates the 40th anniversary of From The Barrel, which Nikka launched in 1985. For this anniversary bottling, the marrying period following blending is twice as long as for the regular expression. During this extended rest in cask, the components of the blend continue to integrate.

Nikka combines more than 100 malt and grain whiskies in this blend. The composition includes single malts from Yoichi and Miyagikyo, as well as predominantly corn-based grain whiskies distilled in Coffey stills. Nikka bottles the blend at 51.4% in 0.5-litre bottles; it has neither added colouring nor chill filtration.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: The nose opens with rich, deep notes of beeswax, orris butter, roasted pineapple and nutmeg. Ginger, malt and earthy impressions of oily peat gradually emerge. With air, chocolate and honey develop, accompanied by heather and linden blossom.
• Palate: The whisky is lively and sharp on the palate, where medicinal notes, smoke and lemon peel mingle with honey. Cocoa, corn, malted barley, and apple and mirabelle plum preserves follow. As it develops, the peat becomes drier and reveals pronounced mineral and saline qualities.
• Finish: The energetic, silky finish begins with a medicinal and invigorating character. It then softens, revealing barley sugar sweets, bitter almond and candied ginger. The deep, opulent aftertaste evokes American rye whiskey.

Distillery/Bottler:

Nikka Whisky Distilling Co. Ltd. composes and bottles the blend. The company traces its origins to Dai Nippon Kaju Co., Ltd., founded by Masataka Taketsuru in 1934; the Yoichi distillery on Hokkaido was completed that same year.

Taketsuru studied the production of malt and grain whisky and the art of blending in Scotland. With the opening of the Miyagikyo distillery in 1969 and the use of Coffey stills, Nikka established a broad foundation for blends of distinctively styled malt and grain whiskies.
