Special Features:
Gin 1689 Authentic Dutch Pink brings together historical gin botanicals, strawberries and raspberries. The idea for this combination comes from a footnote in the old recipe that also underpins Gin 1689 Dutch Dry. The berries give the pink version its colour and complement its juniper character with juicy strawberry and tart raspberry notes. The flavour is lightly reminiscent of jam, although the gin contains no sugar.
Alongside juniper and berries, the recipe includes quince, Pippin apple, lemon and orange peel, nutmeg, anise and cloves. Hints of bread and anise create a flavour link to the Dutch genever tradition. The pink version is offered at 38.5% in a bottle containing 0.7 litres. A suggested serve combines Mediterranean tonic, ice and pieces of strawberry and raspberry.
Tasting Notes:
- Nose: Fresh strawberries shape the aroma, giving it a sweet, inviting character. Spice and citrus notes sit behind them, alongside juniper.
- Palate: On the palate, the gin is smooth and sweet without becoming overly sweet. Raspberries appear immediately; strawberries shape the flavour that follows, leading from fruity to floral impressions. Lightly jam-like notes and subtle spice add to the picture. Orange, lemon and anise emerge towards the end, while juniper brings freshness in the background.
- Finish: The finish is dry and smooth. Juniper lingers with a pine-like note.
Distillery/Bottler:
The Amsterdam Craft Gin Company is behind Gin 1689. The project grew out of a meeting between two Dutchmen in London in 2016; the brand launched in 2018. Their search at the British Library led them to a historical gin recipe in The Distiller of London. It listed the ingredients, but the quantities were encoded. Working with the experienced distillers at Herman Jansen, the founders developed it into a balanced recipe for present-day production.
The gin is produced at Herman Jansen in Schiedam, a historical centre of Dutch genever production. The family business has been making spirits since 1777 and combines experience built up over six generations with modern production facilities. For Gin 1689, it contributed particularly its knowledge of ingredients and how to balance their flavours.
