Oak-cask maturation shapes this vintage rum from J.Bally. Millésime 2002 is a Rhum Vieux Agricole carrying the protected AOC Martinique designation of origin. It is made from pure sugarcane juice; the distillation year 2002 identifies its vintage, not its age.

This amber rum has copper highlights. Its wood-led character combines fruit with gentle spice. It comes in the square bottle characteristic of this bottling, holding 0.7 litres, and is bottled at 43%. A metal tin is included.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: Wood and vanilla lead the restrained nose, accompanied by delicate dried-fruit notes and occasional spicy accents.
• Palate: The rum opens round, soft and powerful on the palate before wood and cinnamon become more pronounced. Tropical fruit, caramel and subtle chocolate notes then emerge. Floral and vegetal accents bring freshness to the flavour profile.
• Finish: Wood, spice and fruit notes linger harmoniously through the long finish.

Distillery/Bottler:

J.Bally has its roots at Habitation Lajus in Le Carbet, on Martinique's northern Caribbean coast. Engineer Jacques Bally modernised the facilities there, installed a steam engine and developed an adapted Creole distillation column. In the 1920s, he began ageing part of his rum production in oak casks. Taking inspiration from Cognac production, he helped develop Martinique's tradition of aged Rhum Agricole.

The historic distillery at Lajus is no longer operating. Today, J.Bally rums are produced at Saint-James, while the brand retains its own production style. Its methods include processing pure sugarcane juice and column distillation; the aged bottlings mature in oak casks in a tropical climate. Bottle design is also part of the house's history: alongside the square bottle, Jacques Bally designed the well-known Art Deco-inspired pyramid bottle.
