Navy Island XO Reserve brings together molasses-based rums from three Jamaican distilleries: Worthy Park, Hampden Estate and Monymusk. The individual rums matured for several years in ex-bourbon casks before being combined into this blend. Most were distilled in pot stills, the traditional vessels used for batch distillation.

Its character combines fruit and marzipan notes with pronounced spice and a silky mouthfeel. Vanilla aromas add another dimension. The rum is offered at 40% alcohol in a 0.7-litre bottle and comes in a presentation tube.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: On the nose, almonds, raisins and damsons mingle with spicy notes. Marzipan and caramel round out the bouquet.
• Palate: On the palate, the rum opens with a bold peppery kick. Fruity notes and marzipan accompany the heat, while the body feels silky and full.
• Finish: The long finish remains spicy and reveals a delicate sweetness.

Distillery/Bottler:

Navy Island takes its name from a small island off Port Antonio on Jamaica's coast. The British Royal Navy used the island in the 18th century. This maritime history inspired the rum brand.

The brand is run by the Navy Island Rum Company, based in Amsterdam. The rums used in XO Reserve, however, are produced in Jamaica. The brand combines spirits from Worthy Park, Hampden Estate and Monymusk rather than limiting the blend to a single distillery. Molasses as the raw material and the predominant use of pot stills define this approach.
