Special Features:
With Kreol Cask, Takamaka brings together rum-making in the Seychelles and a mature spirit from Barbados. The base consists of molasses rums distilled in pot stills and column stills. The rum first comes into contact with French oak, then undergoes a pressing process with French oak wood and wood from former bourbon casks. Eight-year-old rum from the Foursquare distillery in Barbados is then added. The finished blend rests for a further 60 days in old casks that previously held sugarcane juice rum.
Fruity notes complement a character shaped by coffee, cocoa and oak. The rum feels silky and balanced, while a slight salty nuance contrasts with brown sugar and molasses. Kreol Cask is bottled at 40.3% without chill filtration. The 0.7-litre bottle comes in turquoise-and-gold gift packaging. It can be enjoyed neat or over ice and also works well in a drink with ginger ale.
Tasting Notes:
- Nose: Toasted oak, brown sugar and dark molasses lead the nose. Freshly roasted coffee and cocoa beans emerge behind them. Vanilla, dried fruit and toffee add to the aromas alongside coconut and delicate oak spice.
- Palate: The rum is full-bodied and balanced on the palate, with toasted oak as its defining impression. Brown sugar and molasses accompany the wood, with a hint of salt. Roasted coffee and cocoa add a bitter edge to the flavour. Caramel, spice notes, dark chocolate and dried pineapple complete the palate.
- Finish: The long finish is pleasantly warming. Delicate oak spice lingers in the aftertaste. Honey and vanilla complement the soft, rounded finish with its subtle woody character.
Distillery/Bottler:
Brothers Bernard and Richard d’Offay are behind Takamaka. Their inspiration came from their grandfather René Michel d’Offay, who made Rum Arrangé: a Creole speciality in which fruit, spices and other plant parts are steeped in alcohol. In 2000, Bernard and his father Robert began their own distillation experiments. Suitable equipment was difficult to obtain on the remote islands, so they even used the swimming pool for a time as a source of cooling water for their homemade condenser. Richard joined them, and in February 2002 they opened Trois Frères Distillery.
Today, the distillery is based on the historic La Plaine St André estate on the east coast of Mahé. The former plantation estate was built in 1792. After Trois Frères Distillery secured a long-term lease in 2008, the company restored the site over the following two years. Together with the Seychelles Heritage Foundation, the brothers preserve its history. A museum, the remains of historic buildings and a garden of local herbs and spices are now part of the estate.
