In A Mesccia, rum and vermouth are brought together through cask maturation: rather than adding vermouth directly, the rum is matured in casks that previously held vermouth. The blend combines rums from different regions of the world and acquires its subsequent cask influence in Monaco.

The first batch spent just under a year in casks that had previously held vermouth from Bordiga and Del Professore. Some of the Bordiga casks were originally 220-litre barriques that had held Barolo for 18 months before being used for vermouth. The cask selection thus brings together different histories of previous use. The rum is offered at 49% in a 0.7-litre bottle with a presentation case.

The overall aromatic profile combines herbal impressions with acacia honey, ripe apricot, orange peel and mild spices. A delicate bitterness on the finish recalls vermouth and complements the fruity and honeyed notes.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: The nose is expressive, mature and spicy.
• Palate: The rum is powerful and balanced on the palate. The mouthfeel is dry yet rounded.
• Finish: The long finish is silky, with a delicate bitterness reminiscent of vermouth. Spicy, warming accents add to the impression.

Distillery/Bottler:

The Distillerie de Monaco is located in the La Condamine district and is the principality’s first and only distillery. Its liqueurs, spirits and eaux-de-vie draw on Monaco’s agricultural past, in which citrus fruit played an important role. It uses local ingredients in its production.

For the Mesccia project, the Distillerie de Monaco works with Velier and Luca Gargano. The historical inspiration comes from 17th-century maritime trade: seafarers exchanged Caribbean rum for oranges and lemons from the region. In Monaco, the rum was subsequently mixed with vermouth and ouzo, among other things. Today’s bottling draws on this tradition through the use of former vermouth casks. The Distillerie de Monaco handles the maturation and bottling of A Mesccia.
