Angostura 1919 Grand Reserve is a blend of aged rums with a supple character shaped by vanilla and restrained oak. The rums are made from molasses using continuous column distillation and matured in oak casks. Alongside sweet vanilla, there are hints of apple, toffee and toasted oak. The rum can be enjoyed neat, paired with chocolate and desserts, or used in an Old Fashioned.

The name recalls the story of a stock of casks: after a fire at Trinidad's government rum warehouse in 1932, JB Fernandes bought salvaged casks containing rum dating from 1919. Their contents inspired him to create a blend named after that year. Angostura revived the idea in 2001. The current bottling has an alcohol content of 40%; this version contains one 0.7-litre bottle in gift packaging.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: On the nose, vanilla and caramel combine with a light honey note.
• Palate: The rum feels smooth and rounded on the palate. Toffee and cocoa are accompanied by gentle spice and subtle oak notes.
• Finish: The medium-length finish leaves lingering caramel and mild spice.

Angostura's history began in 1824 with the aromatic bitters created by Dr. Johann Siegert. Today, the company's range includes several rum lines alongside its bitters. Angostura 1919 is produced by Trinidad Distillers Limited on Trinidad and sold under the Angostura brand.

Angostura makes its rum from molasses using a proprietary yeast strain with origins in the 1940s. Fermentation usually takes 24 to 36 hours. Continuously operating distillation columns produce lighter and heavier spirits, providing different aromatic foundations for the blends. Maturation takes place in American white oak casks previously used for bourbon. Coopers look after the casks during storage, while the blending team combines aged rums of different characters and checks the blends before and after bottling to ensure consistent quality.
