Special Features:

A former Benriach whisky cask shapes this aged expression of Clairin Vaval. Made in 2018 from the juice of Madame Meuze sugarcane, the rum matured for seven years in Haiti's tropical climate. Kirsch Import selected cask VA17BR-1 for its 50th anniversary. The rum was bottled at 52.3% without chill filtration or added colouring and comes in gift packaging.

Cask maturation adds oak, warm spices and a lightly caramelised richness to the vegetal sugarcane character. Exotic fruit and bitter citrus notes contrast with saline and mineral impressions.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: The nose reveals sugarcane, fresh grass and aromatic herbs, accompanied by exotic fruit and saline minerality. Vanilla and wood remain subtle supporting notes.
• Palate: On the palate, intense tropical fruit and citrus notes contrast with a sweet sugarcane base. Oak, warm spices and a saline savouriness give definition to the full-bodied impression, rounded out by a little caramel.
• Finish: The long finish is marked by pepper, bitter herbs and dry wood. Sugarcane and light-toned fruit linger. Honey-like sweetness and mineral notes emerge at the end.

Distillery/Bottler:

Fritz Vaval produces Clairin Vaval at Distillerie Arawaks in the Haitian coastal town of Cavaillon. The distillery has belonged to his family since 1947; its name recalls the island's indigenous people. Fritz Vaval grows Madame Meuze sugarcane on 20 hectares without chemical fertilisers or pesticides.

Production at Vaval includes harvesting by hand and pressing the sugarcane immediately upon delivery. The fresh juice ferments with naturally occurring yeasts from the fields and surrounding environment. Fritz Vaval built his own distillation equipment, which uses the steam engine from an old locomotive.
