Special Features:

Maturation in casks previously used for peated Islay single malt whiskies gives Islay Rum Barrel Aged its gently smoky character. The rum rests in oak casks that formerly held these island whiskies. Scotland’s cool maritime climate provides different maturation conditions from those found in tropical rum-producing regions. Vanilla and a salty coastal note accompany the cask influence.

The miniature contains 0.05 litres of rum at 46% alcohol. The rum is bottled without colouring or chill filtration.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: On the nose, green bananas meet caramel and leather. Light smoke complements these aromas.
• Palate: On the palate, sweet vanilla and sea-salt caramel combine with ester-led tropical fruit. Light smoke, a subtle medicinal note and a salty coastal note add further impressions.
• Finish: The long finish feels mouth-filling.

Distillery/Bottler:

The Islay Rum Company produces rum in Port Ellen on the Scottish island of Islay. The conversion of the Old Lemonade Factory created Islay’s first rum distillery. The former Hastie lemonade factory stands between Kilnaughton Bay and the Borraichill. Built by brothers Harold and George Hastie, the building was restored by Scott Hastie’s local construction company. Scott is a grandson of one of the two founders and a great-nephew of the other.

Head Distiller Ben Inglis designed the copper pot still with two retorts, which was made by Speyside Copper Works in Scotland. This equipment achieves an effect comparable to triple distillation within a single distillation run and is designed to produce a smooth, ester-rich rum. A substantial proportion of the liquid remaining after distillation is reused in the next fermentation. This supports flavour development while saving water and heat energy. The distillery also uses entirely renewable electricity and a closed-loop cooling-water system.

Facts:
