Maturation in former wine casks shapes Old St. Croix Non Plus Ultra Very Rare. For this blend, the master distiller selects special cask stocks from distilleries in the Caribbean and Central America. The oak casks previously held fortified wines and sweet dessert wines. Their previous contents contribute to the composition’s aromatic depth and sweet character.

The Latin name Non Plus Ultra means roughly “nothing beyond” and refers to the legendary boundary between the known and unknown worlds. Within the series of the same name, Very Rare is released in batches of no more than 2,000 individually numbered, faceted decanters. Each contains 0.7 litres at 42% and comes with gift packaging. In the glass, the blend has a mahogany hue.

Very Rare received top ratings from the International Taste Institute and a gold award at the Tokyo Whisky & Spirits Competition.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: On the nose, delicate spices and orange peel meet muscovado sugar. Mint adds a gently cooling note to the aroma.
• Palate: The blend feels creamy on the palate. Spices, mint, muscovado sugar and orange peel return with intensity, complemented by a hint of caramel and vanilla.
• Finish: The long finish combines creamy vanilla with caramel fudge.

Distillery/Bottler:

Old St. Croix continues the brand previously known as A.H. Riise. Its history is linked to the Danish pharmacist Albert Heinrich Riise and the former Danish West Indies. Riise sourced molasses from sugar production on St. Croix as the raw material for his rum. In the early 1870s, he introduced the name Old St. Croix when marketing his products in the United States and Central America.

Molasses remains the basis of the core distillates used in the brand’s blends. Today, production combines the selection of distillates from various Caribbean and Central American distilleries with carefully directed cask maturation and blending. For Very Rare, the quality of the selected cask stocks determines whether a new batch is produced.
