Oak-cask maturation and the combination of Caribbean and Central American distillates define Old St. Croix Royal Danish Navy The Original. Selected cask stocks from various distilleries are brought together for this blend. Production involves slow fermentation and distillation to 85%; after maturation, the strength is reduced to 40% for bottling. Caramel, spice notes and a subtle smoky touch complement its rounded, balanced character.

The Original reinterprets the navy spirit that Albert Heinrich Riise once supplied to the Danish navy. Today's bottling is a rum-based spirit, offered in a 0.7-litre bottle.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: The nose reveals a pronounced combination of liquorice and orange peel with coconut and papaya. Eucalyptus and mint add to the aromas, with subtle nuances of balsamic reduction and black tea.
• Palate: The spirit is full-bodied on the palate. Citrus notes are balanced with the green impressions of eucalyptus and mint, while liquorice and balsamic reduction give the flavour depth.
• Finish: Mocha and dark chocolate combine with orange in the long finish.

Distillery/Bottler:

Old St. Croix continues the brand history of A.H. Riise. Its historical roots lie with the pharmacist Albert Heinrich Riise, who began production in the Danish West Indies in 1838. The Danish navy was among his early regular customers: officers drank their spirit ration neat, while the crew received it diluted with water as grog.

Today, the brand works with matured distillates from various distilleries in the Caribbean and Central America. The Master Blender selects cask stocks and combines them to create the individual blends. Additional sweetening forms part of the brand's approach, and its bottlings carry the designation Superior Spirit Drink.
