Planteray O.F.T.D. brings together three rum traditions in a high-strength blend in the classic Navy style. The rums come from Guyana, Jamaica and Barbados, and the blend is bottled at 69%. The initials stand for Old Fashioned Traditional Dark. The rum was developed specifically as a flavourful foundation for cocktails such as the Mai Tai or Zombie.

The production methods range from pot stills in Jamaica to pot stills and double-column stills in Barbados, and the Port Mourant double wooden pot still in Guyana. Fermentation times also differ: three days in Barbados, one week in Guyana and two weeks in Jamaica. The components mature in both new and previously used casks. The Guyanese rums age for one to two years, while those from Barbados mature for two to five years. Jamaica contributes both rums aged for one to two years and a component aged for 14 years. The blend then matures for a further three to six months in small, used Ferrand Cognac casks in France.

Alexandre Gabriel worked with six other rum experts to develop the blend: Jeff “Beachbum” Berry, Martin Cate, Paul McFadyen, Paul McGee, Scotty Schuder and David Wondrich. Gabriel and his team created more than 1,000 samples, from which the group selected the basis for the final blend.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: The nose is intense and clearly defined. Coffee, orange, plum and jam combine with an earthy truffle note.
• Palate: Caramel cream, chocolate and vanilla initially lead on the palate. Cinnamon, raisins, nutmeg, oak and molasses follow, accompanied by smoky accents.
• Finish: The long, intense finish leaves dark chocolate, spicy caramel and a distinct clove note. Molasses, oak and plum remain perceptible in the empty glass.

Distillery/Bottler:

Planteray is Maison Ferrand’s rum brand. Since 1999, Master Blender Alexandre Gabriel has worked with local distilleries across different rum-producing regions. The focus extends beyond the countries of origin to their respective fermentation, distillation and maturation methods. The network includes Stade’s West Indies Rum Distillery in Barbados, as well as Clarendon and Long Pond in Jamaica, alongside partner distilleries in other countries, including Guyana.

Double ageing is a defining part of this approach. The rums first mature in their regions of origin before being taken to south-western France for further ageing in used Ferrand Cognac casks. This method draws on the historical transport of rum in wooden casks: the spirit continued to develop during the voyage and subsequent storage in a different climate.
