Special Features:

Planteray Gran Añejo brings together rums from Guatemala and Belize with a second maturation in France. The spirits first mature in former bourbon casks in their countries of origin. They then travel to south-western France for further ageing in used Ferrand cognac casks. This combination of two maturation locations and different previous cask contents is characteristic of Planteray’s double ageing.

The rum starts with molasses, which ferments for four days. Distillation takes place in column stills: the Guatemalan component comes from a four-column installation, while the Belizean component comes from a two-column installation. Part of the Signature Blends range, the blend combines plum and dried-fruit notes with a restrained oak influence. It can be enjoyed neat or in cocktails such as a Mai Tai.

The rum is bottled at 42% in a bottle containing 0.7 litres and comes in gift packaging. Gran Añejo won Gold in the Premium Rum category at The Spirits Business Rum and Cachaça Masters 2022.

Tasting Notes:

  • Nose: Aromas of vanilla, ripe pear and green apple become more prominent over time. A trace of coconut complements the rounded bouquet and its light sherry note, while toasted spices remain in the background.
  • Palate: Baked apple meets caramel sauce and molasses. The rum fills the mouth while retaining a well-defined structure. Hints of aged port and dark dried fruits, including plums, add to the flavour profile.
  • Finish: Virginia tobacco, liquorice and gently sweet oak stand out clearly on the finish.

Distillery/Bottler:

Maison Ferrand is behind Planteray, with Alexandre Gabriel as the rum brand’s founder and Master Blender. Gabriel works with local distilleries, taking their different production methods and conditions of origin into account. The rums are produced in their respective countries; Maison Ferrand handles further maturation in the Cognac region and the blending of the bottlings.

Double ageing draws on the historical rum trade: for centuries, rums were shipped to Europe, blended there and matured further in port warehouses. Planteray continues this approach with used Ferrand casks made from French oak. The cooler, more changeable climate of south-western France provides different maturation conditions from those in the tropical regions of origin. As Master Blender, Alexandre Gabriel decides when the rums are ready for bottling after this second period of ageing.
