Special Features:

Powers Irish Rye is made exclusively from Irish rye. The grain comes from Cooney Furlong Farm in County Wexford, where Powers had it grown specifically for this whiskey. At Midleton Distillery, the mash is processed at a reduced brewhouse throughput and fermented for longer before the whiskey is triple-distilled.

Maturation takes place in new American oak casks as well as first-fill and refill American oak casks. Their sweet fruit and wood notes sit alongside the earthy, peppery spice of the rye. Powers Irish Rye is bottled at 43.2% in 0.7-litre bottles, without colouring or chill filtration.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: The nose reveals burnt orange, maraschino cherries and banana with toffee. Freshly baked rye bread, buttery croissant and charred oak join clove, white pepper, ginger, vanilla and an earthy sugarcane note.
• Palate: On the palate, candied ginger, orange peel, clove and peppermint mingle with caramelised apple and brown sugar. Sweet cereal notes and red liquorice join them, while vanilla and charred oak balance the rye spice. The mouthfeel is slightly oily.
• Finish: The finish is long. A tingle of chilli oil lingers alongside honey-glazed fruit and pronounced cereal notes.

Distillery/Bottler:

The story of Powers began with James Power in Dublin in 1791. Historical mash recipes from the Powers distillery in the 19th and 20th centuries show that rye was already used there. Today, Powers Irish Rye is made at Midleton Distillery in County Cork.

Irish Distillers was formed in 1966 through the merger of Jameson, Powers and Cork Distilleries. The new Midleton Distillery began operating in 1975. For Powers Irish Rye, work there included trials with processing Irish rye and extending fermentation. Irish Distillers has been part of Pernod Ricard since 1988.
