Special Features:

Aberfeldy 12 combines maturation in sherry and bourbon casks with Refill casks previously used to mature whisky and re-charred Rechar casks. This Highland Single Malt matures for at least twelve years, bringing honeyed sweetness and fruit together with creamy vanilla and delicate spice. During this maturation period, almost a third of the whisky evaporates as the so-called angels’ share.

Aberfeldy uses no peat during malting. The very subtle smoky note on the finish develops through contact with the cask. This official bottling has an alcohol content of 40%; the 0.7-litre bottle comes in a gift tube.

Tasting Notes:

  • Nose: The nose combines heather honey with pineapple, butterscotch, cereal and vanilla. Ripe fruit and spices add to the rich, perfumed aroma.
  • Palate: The whisky feels syrupy on the palate, with generous vanilla and creamy fudge. Honey and light sugar syrup give way to spices and orange peel. A little water makes the mouthfeel creamier and brings out a hint of smoke.
  • Finish: Spices and a very subtle smoky note linger on the gentle finish.

Distillery/Bottler:

Aberfeldy Distillery stands in the town of the same name, in a valley at the foot of Scotland’s central Highlands. John Alexander and Tommy Dewar commissioned it to secure a supply of malt whisky for the family company’s blends. Designed by Charles Doig, the distillery began production in 1898. It has belonged to Bacardi-Martini, along with Dewar’s, since 1998.

The distillery draws its water from the Pitilie Burn, known for its alluvial gold deposits. The nickname Golden Dram alludes to this connection. Its honey-led style, however, owes much to long fermentation, copper contact during distillation and cask maturation. Extended fermentation encourages the formation of aroma-bearing esters; slow distillation then takes place in copper pot stills made by Scottish manufacturer Forsyths.
