Big Peat brings together only single malts from the Scottish island of Islay. In this small-batch bottling, Caol Ila's sweetness, Bowmore's balance and Ardbeg's medicinal, earthy character meet Port Ellen's elegance, among other influences. The resulting Blended Malt combines pronounced smoke with sweet and maritime notes.

Big Peat represents Islay within the Remarkable Regional Malts series, which explores Scotland's different malt whisky regions. It is bottled at 46% without chill filtration or added colouring. The bottle contains 0.7 litres and comes in a presentation tube.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: The nose opens fresh, clean and salty, before developing aromas of sweet, peat-dried malt.
• Palate: On the palate, ash and sweetish tar mingle with chimney smoke and maritime impressions of the beach and salt.
• Finish: The long finish echoes the palate. Salty, spicy liquorice, smoke and bonfire ash linger with a distinctly phenolic character.

Distillery/Bottler:

Behind Big Peat is Douglas Laing, an independent family business founded by Fred Douglas Laing in 1948 and now run by the third generation. It began with a few casks of blended Scotch and the King of Scots brand. The founder taught himself the art of blending whisky and secured cask supplies through agreements with Scottish distilleries, some of which remain in place today.

Bringing together whiskies from different distilleries has therefore been part of the company's work from the outset. For Big Peat, Douglas Laing selects only Islay malts and marries them into a shared island profile. The Remarkable Regional Malts series extends this concept to Scotland's different malt whisky regions.
