Craigellachie 13 Year Old combines tropical fruit and sweet, toasted notes with a robust, slightly meaty character. Maturation begins in former bourbon and sherry casks. Half of the whisky then undergoes further maturation in first-fill sherry casks, while the other half matures further in first-fill bourbon casks. Only then are the two portions brought together.

This single malt matures for at least 13 years and is bottled at 46%. Craigellachie uses neither chill filtration nor added colouring: its colour develops entirely during cask maturation. Sweet fruit, spices and a subtle smoky note complement its robust, oily texture.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: The nose combines toasted marshmallows with baked apples and cloves.
• Palate: Roasted pineapple leads the fruit notes on the palate, accompanied by vanilla, toffee and fudge.
• Finish: The long, warming finish has a savoury character. Sweet malt and oak spice linger, accompanied by a very subtle hint of wood smoke and a sulphurous note.

Distillery/Bottler:

Craigellachie Distillery stands on a rocky rise above the confluence of the Fiddich and Spey, between Rothes and Dufftown in Scotland’s Speyside region. Alexander Edward and Peter Mackie commissioned the distillery, designed by Charles Doig, in 1890; production began in 1891. Mackie was associated with Lagavulin and the White Horse blend, and supplying this blend was one of his reasons for founding Craigellachie. Bacardi acquired the distillery in 1998; John Dewar & Sons is responsible for its operation.

Craigellachie retains worm tubs to help create its distinctive house style. In these condensers, long, coiled copper pipes pass through tanks of cold water, turning alcohol vapour back into liquid. This method contributes to the spirit’s pronounced meaty character. The distillery draws its water from the Allacholl Burn. For the official bottlings, Malt Master Stephanie Macleod selects casks and marries their whiskies to maintain a consistent distillery style.
