William Sanderson began his career in the wine and spirits trade in Leith. After his apprenticeship, he established his own business, which began producing liqueurs and whisky blends in 1863. His son William Mark joined the business in 1880 and encouraged the sale of their own blends in bottles. VAT 69 was launched in 1882 and was initially sold in port wine bottles.
Sanderson also had links to whisky production: the family acquired Glen Garioch in 1884, and Royal Lochnagar supplied malt whisky for their blends. Today, VAT 69 belongs to Diageo.
