Special Features:

This five-year-old Indian single malt was finished in a cask that had previously held stout beer. It is made from Indian six-row barley. The whisky was distilled in September 2018 and bottled in September 2023. Master Distiller Ashok Chokalingam selected ex-stout cask number 4863 for the Master Distiller’s Reserve. This single-cask release comprises 282 bottles at 50% and is neither chill-filtered nor coloured.

The beer cask adds darker, spicy impressions to the tropical fruitiness. Mango and orange are joined by pineapple, roasted barley, cocoa and nutmeg. Candied mango and cinnamon complement chocolate, black tea and coffee beans; bitter roasted notes, ripe tropical fruit and a slight malty bitterness also contribute to this bottling’s character.

Tasting Notes:

• Nose: On the nose, mango and orange recede behind darker, slightly musty impressions. Chocolate, ginger biscuits and black tea mingle with a subtle, earthy smoke note. Milky coffee, nutty nuances and mild black pepper add further accents.
• Palate: Coffee beans, dark chocolate and bitter herbal notes shape the palate. Pepper, clove and ginger bring spice, while only a hint of blackberry remains. Peaty nuances emerge as well. Towards the finish, pronounced woody notes combine with earthy smoke; the wood also has an astringent effect.
• Finish: The medium-length finish becomes drier, fading with wood spices and a smoky aftertaste.

Distillery/Bottler:

Amrut Distilleries was founded in Bangalore in 1948 by J.N. Radhakrishna and was initially called Amrut Laboratories. Following his death in 1976, his son Neelakanta Rao Jagdale took over the business. In 1986, the company established a site in Kumbalgodu. Amrut Single Malt made its international debut in Glasgow in 2004. Maturation in a tropical climate is one of the distillery’s distinguishing features.

The Master Distiller’s Reserve is an annual series of selected single-cask bottlings through which Amrut also explores unusual cask profiles. For the stout release, Indian malted barley was distilled twice in pot stills. The stout previously held in the cask was also brewed in Bangalore. The whisky is an official Amrut bottling.
